Baby Barnes Coming Soon

The Barnes household has been on a wild ride for the past couple of months. As many of you may know, we had been trying to get pregnant for quite sometime. Shortly after moving to Connecticut, we decided to go see an infertility specialist to see if we could get to the bottom of it. We didn't get the best news but after tons of testing, procedures, and a surgery, we were able to start IVF in November. A few days before Christmas we found out that the cycle was successful and we were pregnant. A few weeks later we had our first ultra sound and found out that we were having twins (something we knew was a possibility). We could not have been more happy! We felt like we had been waiting to have a baby forever!

As we went to have an ultra sound around week 17 to find out what we were having, we were met with some very sad news. One of our little girls (yes, to my surprise, 2 girls) had fluid in her lungs and brain and chances were very slim that she would survive. After having an Amnio, the doctor determined that it was Turner's Syndrome. Two weeks later we went down to Yale to see a specialist and our baby girl no longer had a heartbeat.

We can't describe the emotions that we felt at that time (and still feel from time to time)...so blessed to have one healthy little girl, so sad to have lost another. We have felt so much peace from Heavenly Father over the last several months and have felt His hand in this process. Our faith has grown, as has our patience, love, and understanding. We have felt near to Him in our times of prayer and have been blessed by the fruits of the gospel. The out pouring of love from those around us has been indescribable. Within hours we were blessed with flowers, cards, snacks, dinners, and even a certain movie that had just come out on dvd. We've never felt so loved in our entire life. Its so nice to know that you are being taken care of when your family is so far away.

Things were difficult for me for awhile. I stayed working to keep my mind off of it all. I still hadn't bought anything for the baby but after a recent trip home and lots of spoiling from mine and Mike's mom, I am starting to feel so much excitement for this little girl, to be named Rose. I still have my sad moments, which I think is to be expected. I still get the occasional "How are the babies?" question which always brings me back to the memory of finding out the news. The crazy part is that I didn't really tell that many people I was pregnant until around 15 weeks.

We had an ultra sound today. We love seeing baby Rose. She kicks me constantly! I am so grateful for that. I think she just wants me know that she's there and I love her for it. We are so grateful for this opportunity that we have to bring her into the world (due August 28th) and we cannot wait to meet her!

Rosey Barnes, with daddy's nose and all :)
I had to take a picture of all of these needles that went into my body to get this little girl! It did not come easy. I still have pain in my hip/butt area from all of the progesterone but I know its all worth it.
During the IVF process my ovaries were hyper stimulated and the only thing that can really bring them down is Gatorade. This may not seem like a lot but I drank all of this and give or take a few more bottles in like 2 weeks. Let me just say that I have not drank any since.

Thank you so much for all of the cards, gifts, love, and prayers. We are forever grateful! We are also so grateful for modern medicine! Maybe it sounds silly but without it we're not sure where we'd be at now. We are also so thankful for the team of doctors and nurses that helped us along the way.

Jen, I don't know if you remember from Pullman. I just happened to come across your blog from Kim Mowers. I just wanted to say congrats on your up coming baby girl. I can't imagine all you've been going through. When I read your story it hit really close to home, so I just had to comment. My sister in law lost her 2nd baby a couple months ago to turner's syndrome as well. I was so surprised to read someone has just gone through the same thing as well. She found out at 18 weeks when her Dr tried to get her to terminate the pregnancy her case was so severe. She carried her for 7 more weeks hanging on to her as long as she could. She's really struggled with the lose. So I know you must be struggling a great deal too. I'm so sorry! What a blessing to know families are eternal and that she was perfect enough to not have to go through the trials of life. I'm grateful you have another sweet girl you'll get to hold soon enough. Good luck on the rest of your journey! Take care! You'll be in my prayers!

I'm so happy for you guys to finally get your sweet baby! My heart breaks for you at the loss of your other little girl. I think you are handling it exactly right. Of course you will mourn her loss but it's okay to still be excited about Rose! We had twins with our first pregnancy and lost one. It's not fun to see the ultrasound showing that one of the babies doesn't have a heartbeat. Anyway, good luck with everything! There is nothing better than a new baby - especially your own. Congratulations!!

Hey guys, I've been out of the internet loop for like a month now. This was the 2nd page I came to after we got all hooked up here at our new place, and I'm glad it was. Thanks for sharing your story! I miss you guys so SO much that it honestly hurts my heart a little.
Jen you are friggin brave to deal with all those sharps AND to drink that much Gatorade. I probably couldn't do either. Oh yeah and hold tight - you have something on the way from Colorado (it took a while because a part of it had to be shipped here first).

Love ya, miss ya
Joni

I was just venting to Shawn the other day how much I dislike the unfairness of fertility. That people who don't want kids can get pregnant accidentally and have abortions and then families who would be wonderful parents have to go through such struggles to concieve or adopt. But thank goodness for the Gospel because it provides a solid rock of support, especially when you're the one that has to go through it. I'm so glad that IVF worked for you and am very excited for you to be a Mom. You two will be amazing parents. And I send hugs your way for having to deal with bad news along with the good. You are such a strong person and wonderful example.
